Mistakes People Make That Wear Down Their Brakes

As you drive, you constantly use your brakes to control your speed and stop. Due to this constant use, you can make mistakes that will cause your brakes to lose function. Learning about the mistakes people make that wear down their brakes can help you better maintain your brakes and prevent road accidents.

Braking Too Hard

There are some elements on the road that you may not have the power to control, but there are still times when you brake too hard and too suddenly. The faster your vehicle moves, the more momentum it gains. This makes it more difficult to come to a controlled stop. It’s a mistake to brake too hard while going at fast speeds, as it causes your brakes to wear down. Eventually, it becomes harder to have a controlled stop. Gradually braking while driving is always the best option if you can help it. Less damage will occur to the brakes. As a result, they won’t wear down as quickly, and you won’t be asking yourself, “Why are my brakes wearing down so fast?”

Following Too Closely Behind Cars

Another mistake people make that wears down their brakes is if they follow too closely behind other vehicles. As you drive, you should do your best to maintain a three-second gap between your vehicle and the one in front of you. This precaution isn’t only necessary to give you enough time to react in case the car ahead makes a sudden stop; it also ensures your brakes don’t receive too much wear. When you drive too close behind a vehicle, you’ll constantly need to brake to prevent yourself from tapping its bumper. This constant braking will wear down your brakes faster. Keep a safe distance as much as possible to preserve your brakes and keep yourself safe while driving.

Braking for Long Periods

This action is common on the road, and it’s a mistake people make that wears down their brakes. When you need to stop driving fast or downhill, it’s a normal instinct to want a controlled velocity. As a result, you may press on the brakes for the duration of the distance you need to drive slowly. You may press on the brake pedal for a longer period than usual. However, this will cause the brake pads to wear down. Shifting to a lower gear will cause less stress on the brakes while you go at a slower speed. Shifting to L (Low) or gear 1 or 2 will create more power in the engine while keeping the braking to a minimum. By showing such restraint, you won’t wonder why your brake pads wear out quickly.

Braking is an important trait of any vehicle. These mistakes are common occurrences for drivers, and if your brakes show signs of wear or malfunctioning, you can visit a brake repair shop to get a replacement or repair. Understanding and acknowledging these mistakes will allow you to have an easier time maintaining your brakes and keeping your vehicle free from accidents as you travel on the road.
